The 110 metre high Renaissance Barcelona Fira Hotel is located on Plaça Europa, now one of Barcelona’s most important squares. It breaks away from the standard architectural paradigms for this type of building with a vertical garden that provides a different way of living in and experiencing the city. The hotel consists of 357 rooms, 11 meetings rooms, a panoramic restaurant, a fitness centre with a heated indoor pool, a terrace bar including a gazebo with a lookout, an outdoor pool and a solarium. The facades facing east and west are luminous and almost blindingly white, while the north façade is matte black. The chromatic differentiation doesn’t stop there, penetrating the rooms adjacent to these façades with walls in the same colour, some predominantly white, others in black. There are no windows. Instead there are transparencies that project and diffuse the screen-printed plant motifs from the façade onto the walls. It is a mutating material that plays with the light and changes throughout the course of the day. The palm tree leaves cast shadows and reflections onto the floors, walls and corridors by both day and night. The play of light is ever-changing. It enters the rooms and impacts on the walls, ceilings, curtains, sheets, flooding every space in the building. Two outer loggias connect the tower’s two sections along their full length. Here, a lush vertical landscape, bounded by the hotel room corridors, is traversed by a Piranesian set of terraces and stairs. The screen-printed corridor walls blend with the vegetation at all times. By night, this effect is created by specially designed lighting, and throughout the day by the shades of colour which enhance the changing effect of the sunlight. The building is adapted to the Barcelona climate with architectural solutions that minimize energy consumption. The east, west and south walls exposed to the strong sunlight are white and resolved with a ventilated wall system. Architectural concrete is used on the inside for thermal inertia to maintain a constant room temperature, with thermal insulation on the outside, an air pocket and a white screen-printed glass finish. Each guest will find a room adapted to their enjoyment and needs. There are alcove rooms for shared pleasures, perfectly sized business rooms for congress attendees and executives, junior suites and other suites in which the bedroom, living area and bathroom can be combined to suit the guest’s wishes
